EMS - ISO 14001 Consulting Phases

Coral's ISO 140001 Consulting and Certification journey for its clients has the following phases

Phase I - Business Requirements and Scoping

  • Every Business is unique in terms of its business model, customers, technology, internal processes and the environmental footprint
  • Our consultants will assess environmental impact an organization activities, their products and services using a life cycle perspective.
  • With this perspective, we determine and advise EMS goals and metrics that management wishes to achieve as part of the ISO 14001 implementation journey
  • Scope is a boundary statement for ISO 14001 certification that encompasses organization products and services and internal functions that support environmental management system.

Phase II - Gap Analysis and Environment Risk Assessment

  • Experienced EMS consultants will perform Environmental Risk Assessment, and recommend changes, and opportunities of improvements
  • These can include changes in technology, technical processes, responsibilities, reports and procedures.
  • ISO 14001 certification requirement is used as a tool to score your current maturity. We deliver a report that show the degree of compliance on a 3 point scale (Red/Orange/Green)
  • EMS consultants will discuss each EMS requirement and handhold the organization towards decision making and implementation.

Phase III - Policy Design and Documentation

  • Policies and procedures helps in defining a 'system-approach' to EMS
  • Each Policy has a correlation that can include an environment risk, organization context, and an owner, who is responsible for ensuring the policy implementation
  • Staring with the environmental policy and setting environment objectives, this phase involve documentations of EMS internal policies and procedures as per the requirement of the ISO 14001 standards
  • Brainstorming with stakeholders on these new policies to enable successful implementation

Phase IV - Training

  • Staff responsible for managing the EMS must undergo training and awareness of EMS, and how they individually contribute to the environment as whole.
  • They must be aware of the newly established policies and procedures, which will drive their day to day operations.
  • Awareness can be both through the classroom style sessions as well as participation in environment damage minimization exercises.

Phase V - Internal Audit

  • Internal audit for iso 14001 is conducted to test EMS implementation, and comparing it against the goals and objectives set in Phase 1.
  • Internal Audits include coverage of all teams, their awareness, their alignment with the newly formed policies, and an assurance that newly designed policies and practices will remain effective in future.
  • Most internal audits will show weaknesses in the first cycle, which is an intended exercise. Audits findings are reported and shared with stakeholders to improve the EMD, reducing the risk of Environmental disasters.

Summary

At this stage:

  • As a result of undergoing these phases, the organization has effectively implemented an operational Environmental Management system (EMS) that includes people, processes, technology and metrics.
